After a false start in quarry engineering I took up the writing racket in my mid-20s. I started out in radio in Toronto, but the near bankruptcy of the station's owner ended that promising career.

With Unemployment Insurance running out, it was off to a major magazine publisher and a place on the bottom rung of the business writing world. My first stop was on a magazine that covered industrial finishing; if you think watching paint dry is tedious try writing about it.

I was able to elbow my way into the editor's chair of a current events magazine that was distributed to high schools in Canada. Thirty-five years later I'm still there, now as owner. Some might say this shows a singular lack of ambition, others might call it dedication. Personally, I like "others." Anyway, I've enjoyed every minute of it.
